NATA Novice thing.

I finished my Novice round entry for NATA, if you want to watch it here's a link.

I got sort of overly ambitious with this, animating a 5 minute long cartoon in 3 weeks is not a good idea. I should've cut some scenes, but I think I'm relatively happy with how it turned out. I stepped out of my comfort zone with it, not just with the length but I was aiming for a semi-serious tone in it, which I've not done before. I remember liking it when I wrote it, so I'm hoping it's decent now but I'm so burnt out on it I don't really know what to think about it anymore. I'm planning on walking away from it for a week or two and coming back to see it freshly, to see if I still like it then.

If you've got any constructive criticism on it, I'd like to hear that. I don't get critical feedback very often and I'd like to hear some to try and make my next thing better. Anyway, this is probably my last round of NATA, but I'm glad I did it this year. I met some cool people and learned a lot and whatnot. Valuable experience. I reccomend it.

Thanks

- Jonny.

lookin good, a lot of the jokes landed nicely. i think the best thing to work on would be scope. you had a lot of ideas to tackle in one short, and, even with 5 minutes, there just wasn't enough runtime to really get to them all.

just taking one of the ideas in the piece, like the drugs or the loneliness or the mental health, and using that one core-idea to flesh out an entire short would go a long way into strengthening your pieces.

knowing when to cut out good ideas if they aren't fully in line with the core of your piece is just as important as being able to come up with good ideas in the first place. gotta kill your babies.

in any case, you've definitely grown as an artist since i last had a chance to check out your work, and it's nice to see you branching out. seems like you're on the right track, looking forward to more work from you.

I really appreciate the feedback, when you were talking about trying something different in the NATA skype thing got me thinking, and it was a lot of the reason I tried to make something different this round. And I'm glad I did, so thanks for that. The feedback I've gotten from this short already has been more helpful than anything I've gotten in the past, so I feel like that's a good sign.

Anyway, thanks. I'm excited to see what you do this round, your stuff is always a highlight.

Is there going to be a background to make the characters pop out from the 2d plane?

I think I'm done working on it, I put the backgrounds in where I felt they were necessary, but I think I'm ready to move on from this project. I'm not gonna be able to work on it any more before the deadline, and I think afterwards I'd rather just start something new. Had I had the time, I'd have done backgrounds for sure though.

why does every character have a stutter

I didn't notice until you pointed it out, but apparently I write with a stutter. Like I went back and read the scripts and the stuttering is scripted.

Also I have a little stutter. That's probably not helping either.

that sounded a lot less mean in my head

We good, no biggie.
